The owner of Ambeli Greek Taverna, Christos Zavolas, grew up in the restaurant business. His father owned diners and his mother cooked authentic Greek dishes throughout his childhood. Christos was one of 5 boys, and many days his mother would cook a large pan of Pastitsio (Greek baked pasta dish), which her sons would then devour. Christos had wanted to open a Greek restaurant his whole life, and when he visited Cranford he knew he had found the perfect town to make his dream come to life. Ambeli is a family restaurant, and offers dishes and an atmosphere that welcomes everyone.
The restaurant’s recipes come from Christos’ mother, and Christos has worked closely with his chef to make sure they have been perfected. Christos has been a Greek wedding singer for 20 years and loves interacting with people. When you go to Ambeli you can expect to find him at the front of the restaurant, greeting guests and making sure everything is running smoothly. The menu is filled with Greek favorites like Tzatziki, Grilled Octopus, Spanakopita, Pastitsio, and Baklava. Though the restaurant has been open for just over a week it’s already receiving rave reviews.
Christos had murals painted on the walls of the restaurant that recall the Greek island he used to visit. He hopes that customers will view Ambeli as a place that can transport them to the Greek islands with its authentic cuisine. “We were nervous about opening but everyone has been so welcoming and friendly,” said Christos. People have been eagerly awaiting the opening of Ambeli, and we’re so happy that day is finally here. Grab your favorite bottle of wine (or Ouzo), and head over to Ambeli to enjoy a taste of Greece right here in Cranford.
